More than half of couples DON'T have sex on their wedding night - mostly because the groom is too drunk

A couple were once expected to consummate their union as man and wife by having sex on their wedding night.

But, according to a new poll, 52 per cent of newlyweds don't end up in the throes of passion on the eve of their special day, most often because the groom gets too drunk.
Tiredness and arguments at the reception also proved to be common reasons for not consummating a marriage on the wedding night.

Celebration: Almost a quarter (24 per cent) of the time there's no sex because the groom is too drunk

The poll asked 2,138 individuals who got married in the past three years what really went on in the marital bedroom.

More than half (52 per cent) admitted to not consummating their marriage on their wedding night. And nearly one in five (17 per cent) confessed to waiting more than three days after their wedding ceremony to officially consummate their marriage.

Bad start: Nine per cent of the newlyweds had an argument before the wedding reception endedParticipants who did not have sex were asked to divulge the reasons why their wedding night was not celebrated in the traditional way of making love. The top answer was because the groom was too drunk while the bride being too inebriated was in third place. After having an early start to get their hair and make-up done, followed by the excitement of the ceremony and reception, the second most popular reason was that the bride was too tired and fell straight to sleep after hitting the sack.
For some, the reason did not bode well for their married life together with nine per cent saying they had an argument at the reception and four per cent saying 'neither of us felt like it'.A spokesman for Voucher Codes Pro, who conducted the research, said the results reflect a shift in modern relationships - as many couples now live together before trying the knot meaning their first night together as a married couple has lost some significance.
They said: 'The results of our study seem to highlight perfectly the fact that the emphasis of wedding night sex for married couples is no longer a huge factor.
'It may be that the stress and pressure of organising a wedding in today's society takes the main priority, especially considering such a large proportion of couples have been living together for years, and have children once they get married nowadays.'
