Onlookers battle in vain to rescue van being swamped by rising tide after driver parked it on beach

A white van became stuck in the ocean on Redcar beach in Teeside on Sunday afternoon. The coastguard spent hours trying to free the vehicle as the tide came in and surrounded the car.
